Just because Dallas Keuchel remains unsigned does not mean he will need an extended period to be ready to contribute.

Here we are, on the first of June, and Dallas Keuchel remains a MLB free agent. Considered to be one of the top pitchers available on the market, Keuchel was unable to find a suitor that was willing to meet his demands, causing him to languish in free agency.

Given that time away, it would be understandable is Keuchel would need some time to get ready. However, according to agent Scott Boras, he may not need as much time as one would expect.

Obviously, there is a major difference between a simulated game and actually pitching in the majors. And yes, he has thrown around 100 pitches each time, but one cannot duplicate the effort and stress of an actual game. Let us also not forget Boras and his tendency to hyperbole, which is likely for this statement.

Chances are, Keuchel will need to make a couple of appearances in extended Spring Training, maybe spanning two or three weeks to be ready for the majors. Even if he signs right after the draft, or even during the selections, Keuchel may not be ready to make a real impact until the calendar turns to July.

While he may not be a top of the rotation arm, Keuchel can still be a boost to the middle of a pitching staff. He posted a respectable 3.74 ERA and a 1.314 WHiP in his 204.2 innings, striking out 153 batters with just 53 walks. That is solid production from a third starter.

It is possible that Keuchel will determine the outcome of a divisional race. The Yankees, Rays, Braves, and Phillies, amongst others, have been mentioned as possible suitors for Keuchel. His presence could change the fortunes of whichever team he lands on, keeping them from the dreaded Wild Card Game.

Dallas Keuchel could be a major boost for a contender. However, it may take longer than that week for him to be ready.
