Colorado Rockies center fielder Charlie Blackmon has been on a tear at the plate as of late and broke a 58-year old record Sunday.

By going 3-for-6 at the plate against the San Diego Padres (35-37), Colorado Rockies center fielder Charlie Blackmon tallied his 15th hit of the four-game series, breaking the previous record of 14, last accomplished in 1961.

He was close to tying another record, one that was set back in 1925 by Milt Stock as the only players in Major League history with four hits in four consecutive games.

He is in the midst of a career year with a batting line of .336/.385/.652, with 16 home runs and 47 RBI’s.  As the quintessential leadoff man, he is leading the league with 6 triples and has only 46 strikeouts.

To put that into perspective, the man leading the league in strikeouts, Javier Baez has struck out 92 times.

Unfortunately for the Rockies (37-34), Blackmon’s record day was not enough to win the game as they fell to the Padres, 14-13.

The Rockies and the Padres broke another record, the record for runs in a four-game series.  They scored 92 and the previous record was 88 and that was set way back in 1929 by the Phillies and Dodgers.

Blackmon, in his 9th year in the league, should earn a trip to his 4th All-Star game this year with his performance.  He is also getting a lot of help from his other teammates.

The Rockies have the second-best team batting average at .271 and have four players hitting above .300.  That includes David Dahl, Nolan Arenado, Blackmon and Tony Wolters.

If the Colorado Rockies to continue to play like this at a high level, there is no telling where they could end up.  Unfortunately, like the rest of the teams in the NL West, I don’t think there is any way they catch the Dodgers, but they are definitely in a good spot to win a Wild Card spot and play in the postseason.
