New York Mets: Mickey Callaway Has One Foot Out the Door
After a 5-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs, New York Mets manager Mickey Callaway cursed out a reporter after he said a sarcastic comment. Callaway stepped out of line, and he is on the edge of being fired.
Let’s run down what happened Sunday afternoon in the friendly confines of Wrigley Field. This is another reason why New York Mets manager Mickey Callaway has a foot out the door (next page).
A Poorly Advised Decision Made Late in the Game
New York Mets manager Mickey Callaway left in reliever Seth Lugo in the 8th inning after he didn’t have his command or stuff.
Lugo proceeded to give up a go-ahead home run to none other than Javier Baez. All Edwin Diaz could do was sit in the bullpen and watch Baez get a curtain call after he just hit his 100th career home run and gave Chicago a win.
Edwin Diaz never ran out of the bullpen, as New York went down in order in the top of the 9th inning.
About 15 minutes later, reporter Tim Healey of Newsday told Callaway, “See you tomorrow, Mickey” and the manager replied, “Don’t be a smart—, motherf—“.
Callaway reportedly walked away into another room, but then came back and let out yet another tirade.
Callaway told a Mets PR person to “Get this f—er out of here, we don’t need that bull—-“.
That’s when pitcher Jason Vargas threatened Healey, telling him, “I’ll knock you the f— out, bro.”
All Healey wanted to do was ask closer Edwin Diaz his reaction about not being called for in the 8th, but it turned into a fight.
Callaway On the Verge of Being Out the Door
This all happened after the New York Mets fired their pitching coach last week in favor of an 82-year-old.

Mickey Callaway was brought in because of how he managed a very talented Indians pitching staff in the World Series, and you could say the Mets pitching staff is similar to Cleveland’s if they had the right guidance.
Well, as I said the 2nd year manager has already let go his pitching coach, which means there is already a state of confusion inside the clubhouse, and then the very next weekend the Mets lose a huge series finale because the manager didn’t make the right decision.
The reporters are doing their job by asking him why he didn’t pull Lugo, but Callaway didn’t do his properly.
A manager of a Major League Baseball team is the face of the franchise. It talks to the media multiple times a day and somewhat controls what the public thinks of the franchise.
Callaway totally failed at his job on Sunday in so many ways.
The New York Mets hired Jim Riggleman to be his bench coach, and ironically Riggleman is the king of interim managers. He has managed 1,630 games as the interim manager including stints with the Seattle Mariners (2008), Washington Nationals (2009), and most notably the Cincinnati Reds after Bryan Price‘s dismissal (2018).
New York is playing the Phillies in Philadelphia, and Gabe Kapler‘s squad has lost 7 straight games including being swept this weekend by the Miami Marlins, so if New York struggles this week I would not be surprised if a change was made not in favor of Mickey Callaway.
Therefore, he already has a foot out the door because he was walking towards the door when his pitching staff was underperforming so Dave Eiland got shown the door, but now GM Brodie Van Wagenen is just about ready to push Callaway out the door after his latest antics.
