There are reports that on June 1st during the New York Mets game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Mets’ GM Brodie Van Wagenen ordered manager Mickey Callaway to pull their starter.

First of all, let’s just let this all sink in.  The New York Mets‘ (37-42) GM messaged his manager, in-game, from his home, ordering his manager to remove Jacob deGrom during his start against the Arizona Diamondbacks (40-40).  Again I’ll give you a few minutes to let this sink in.

If this is true it is wrong on so many different levels.  We have all know that the New York Mets are a ginormous dumpster fire that seems like it will never be put out.  It’s absolutely ridiculous.

How is manager Mickey Callaway supposed to gain credibility with his players if Van Wagenen doesn’t let him make those decisions?  He can’t and this is a black eye for a franchise that has been in trouble for years now.

I understand he was probably concerned about a possible injury, but isn’t that why you hire a manager?  To manage your team during the game?  This action, if true totally, 100 % undermines Callaway’s influence in the clubhouse.

What do you think the players are thinking in the clubhouse?  I can guarantee you they aren’t discussing the last game, which was a loss to division rival Philadelphia Phillies (40-38).  I just don’t know what else can be said about this team.

This is just another sign that Callaway is on his way out as discussed by fellow Call to the Pen contributor, Ben Fadden here.  Unfortunately, the first casualty of a poor season is the manager.  I don’t think Callaway will even last the rest of the season.

Frankly if he is fired, it should be followed by Van Wagenen, who really has done nothing to improve this team.  Mets’ fans, I’m sorry I don’t have the answer for your franchise.  It doesn’t seem like they can make a good decision to turn its fate around and the future is still looking bleak.
