New York Mets manager Mickey Callaway feels that the New York Mets need a miracle. Instead, they need a new voice on the bench.

The New York Mets have certainly had their challenges this season. Originally expected to be a postseason contender this season, the Mets have instead limped to a 37-47 record through Saturday’s action, losers of seven in a row. They have been a team of chaos, with team meetings, a myriad of injuries, coaching staff changes, and overhauls intended to shake up the roster.

It has gotten to the point where manager Mickey Callaway has his own idea as to what the Mets need this season – divine intervention.

At this point, Callaway is correct. If things do not change in New York, the team will need a miracle to contend. Edwin Diaz, the best closer in the game last year has proven mortal. Robinson Cano looks old and disinterested. Callaway and Jason Vargas are challenging reporters to fistfights. The Bronx Zoo has moved to Queens.

Maybe what the Mets need is not a miracle. Instead, maybe they need another voice on the bench. Callaway not just appears to have a foot out the door already, but is actively trying to get himself fired. Getting into screaming matches with the press and essentially giving up on the season before the end of June would be telling.

For his part, general manager Brodie Van Wagenen is trying to make this work. Callaway was considered to be on the hot seat from the moment that the new GM was brought in, as it was thought that he would want his guy on the bench. Instead, he has tinkered with virtually everything else while supporting Callaway, at least publically.

At this point, the Mets do not have another choice. The season is spiraling out of control, as the promise from the start of the season has faded far behind. If New York is going to have any chance of turning their season around, Callaway needs to go. Otherwise, nothing short of that miracle will save the season.

Mickey Callaway feels the New York Mets need a miracle to reach the postseason. Instead, they just need a different voice.
