Since 1989, John Sterling has been the one constant for the New York Yankees and their fan base. Except for two way back at the start in 1989, Sterling has announced every single Yankees game on the radio.
When the Yanks take on the Tampa Bay Rays this coming weekend before the All-Star break, however, that streak will officially come to an end. According to Andrew Marchand of the New York Post, the 81-year-old legendary announcer hasn’t been feeling well of late.

It is unclear what ailments Sterling has, but fans should rest assured that they will hear his legendary, “Thaaaaaa Yankees Win!” call again. In fact, Sterling is expected to return after the All-Star break.
In the interim, the jack of all trades Ryan Ruocco will sit alongside Suzyn Waldman for the 4-game set against the Rays.
Sterling made a name for himself with his unique home run calls in which he issues nicknames to different Yankee players. Calls like, “An A-Bomb for A-Rod!” for Alex Rodriguez or “Bern baby Bern!” for Bernie Williams.
Don’t forget the controversial — for New York — Giancarlo Stanton call, which literally dominated the NYC airwaves on a daily basis.
If nothing else, fans of the Bronx Bombers should take this opportunity to appreciate John Sterling’s standing with the organization. His tenure with as the New York Yankees radio announcer has proven fruitful for the franchise.
