The New York Mets and New York Yankees haven’t made a trade in years, but Zack Wheeler could find himself switching boroughs for the right price

The New York Mets and New York Yankees haven’t made a deal since 2004 when Mike Stanton and Felix Heredia were swapped for each other. The season has not gone how the New York Mets thought it would and it’s probably time to have the foresight to think about 2020 (pun intended).

One piece they could move and get some value for is pending free agent pitcher Zack Wheeler. Wheeler gave the New York Yankees a preview last night, going six innings of two-run ball, and if the price is right, the New York Mets could send him to the Bronx.

Trades between the Mets and Yankees are rare, but if the Yanks make the strongest offer for Zack Wheeler, the Mets would have no issues sending him across town, according to major league sources.

Here’s the thing. I don’t believe for one second that if/when the New York Mets trade Wheeler, it will be across town. If they did and Wheeler went 3-0 in the playoffs and the New York Yankees win a World Series, the New York Mets fan base will be irate and this season will go down as one of the worst in franchise history unless they get two future Hall of Fame players in the deal.

The Chicago White Sox sent Jose Quintana to the Chicago Cubs and are starting to reap the benefits of that trade with Eloy Jimenez and Dylan Cease, who is set to make his major league debut today.

Brodie Van Wagenen has to take a page out of Sonny Weaver’s book and do what’s best for the team. If that best for the New York Mets is sending Wheeler to the New York Yankees, so be it. However, if he is moved, I just don’t think it will be to the Yankees.
