The San Diego Padres have reportedly done their due diligence on Tigers ace Matthew Boyd, but should they give up an All-Star for him?
The San Diego Padres have had more success this year than most fans would have believed they would have at the start of the season.
Much of that success is in part to Hunter Renfroe and Franmil Reyes. But one of them would be shipped to Detroit if AJ Preller were to pull the trigger on a trade for Boyd.
Detroit would ask for top pitching prospects and an All-Star player, particularly an outfielder because their best outfielder Nicholas Castellanos will be a free agent.
The All-Star they would want is either Hunter Renfroe or Franmil Reyes.
Matthew Boyd is the controllable starter the Padres are looking for and has been looking for since last offseason, and this would be a good opportunity to get him but they shouldn’t if that trade involves Hunter Renfroe.

Boyd is having a career year and will be under control until the end of the 2022 season. San Diego’s contention window truly begins next season and should be open for many years.
If Detroit wants Reyes and some pitchers then San Diego should do it.
Boyd would be coming from an American League team which would help the Padres in a deal because that means there is an additional spot called the DH that would fit the role of Franmil Reyes.
Reyes has not been good defensively this year, often getting replaced by Wil Myers recently late in ballgames.
He has developed offensively though, as he has slugged 25 homers in the first 90 games of the season.
On the other hand, Hunter Renfroe has developed both defensively and offensively as he has 27 HR.
Renfroe has taken pride in getting better defensively and more particularly in Left Field (his first full season at the position).
He has worked on not bobbing his head up and down while he is tracking down balls and has gotten more efficient with his routes.
Therefore, he should be off limits in a trade with Detroit because the Tigers probably would be happy with getting either of the outfielders (in this case Franmil Reyes), so Preller can tell Tigers GM Al Avila that Reyes suits their club better than Renfroe because he would do well DH’ing while Renfroe would be better playing the outfield in the NL.
