After receiving high praise for making bold moves in the offseason, the New York Mets have failed to deliver. Now, a potential trade option in Zack Wheeler lands on the IL weeks before the deadline.

The New York Mets pitcher Zack Wheeler impending free agency has been the topic of discussion for a while now. It doesn’t help that he was just added to the injured list with an impingement in his right shoulder.

Does this latest injury seal his fate? The timing is very worrisome.

Let’s take a look at the facts, Wheeler does not have Noah Syndergaard or Jason Vargas numbers but he is valuable. He has a 3.66 FIP in 2019 and a 4.69 ERA. Is it time that he wore a new uniform?

Zack Wheeler was originally drafted in 2009 to the San Francisco Giants. He was then traded to the Mets in 2011 and made his major league debut in 2013.

The Red Sox were just one of the teams eying the ace early this year. Some fans think he could make moves in Houston. Then again, he is no Madison Bumgarner.

Teams like the Chicago Cubs and the New York Yankees want an ace, not an injured so-so pitcher. We also have seen their pitching staff make strides with team players over the years. Maybe that’s exactly what he needs to improve.

With this trade deadline so close on July 31st, this injury is definitely worrisome. Wheeler calms nerves in a new interview with NorthJersey.com where he says he is “happy it’s nothing structural” and that his MRI came back clean.

He also didn’t want to give a clear timeline of when he was going to be back. The earliest would probably be July 23rd if his right shoulder feels better. The good news is that he did play catch in Target field yesterday morning.

Even though it is not a detrimental injury, this still might put a dent in his trade offers. Between that and his overall numbers, he might just stay with the New York Mets. Maybe they will offer an extension? Where do you think he will be traded?
