The Boston Red Sox aren’t going to win the division over the Yankees and likely won’t win the Wild Card, so they might be in sell mode before the deadline.
The Boston Red Sox are coming off of a World Series win against the Dodgers with huge performances by Chris Sale, Steve Pearce, and Nathan Eovaldi.
But 2019 was a different story. Chris Sale finally one his first home game of the season, Steve Pearce is on the Injured List, and Nathan Eovaldi has been moved to the bullpen after sustaining another arm injury.

Boston has not had a successful season, as Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez have had good years but not MVP years like a year ago.
Currently, they sit 10 games back of the Yankees and 2 back of the Wild Card.
So, their chances of winning a World Series or even making it past the Wild Card game are not very great and their best way to improve may be to sell and hope they get back to winning form next season.
Manager Alex Cora has realized that they are still in the thick of things for the Wild Card but understands that the smarter bet may be to sell.
“The front office has a job to do,” he said. “Obviously our goals are set to win the World Series. If it doesn’t look that way and they go somewhere else and take another approach, you’ve got to respect that. At the end, we have to perform and we have to win games.”
Rick Porcello is a free agent at the end of the season but is having his worst year yet with an ERA north of 5. Mitch Moreland and Brock Holt are also free agents after the 2019 campaign.
If the Boston Red Sox were to sell, Mookie Betts would be the biggest trade chip, but he wants to stay. It’s been nothing but amazing here,” he said. “Just because you go to free agency doesn’t mean you don’t want to be somewhere. It’s just a part of the business.”
