Earlier today, the Milwaukee Brewers acquired right-handed pitcher Jordan Lyles in exchange for Cody Ponce from the Pittsburgh Pirates. Here’s what we know so far:

Multiple sources have confirmed that newly acquired Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Jordan Lyles was supposed to start tonight for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Instead, he was suddenly traded and they will in return get Cody Ponce from the Brewers Double-A team.

More from Call to the Pen

July was a hard month for Lyles because he went 0-18 in his first 18 starts. He currently has a 5.36 ERA for the 2019 season. After the All-Star break, the Pirates were also only 2 and 14. Maybe a change of pace and a new team will be better for him. The Pirates coaches could only do so much for him. The Brewers already DFA’d Marcos  Diplan to make room for him on the 40 man roster.

Some fans are confused why the Brewers would trade for Lyles after his latest losses.

The Brewers were in a strong need for starters and that’s most likely the reason for the trade. Despite the losses and hard time Lyles has had they thought he was worth trading one of their best pitching prospects.

Cody, however, shows strong promise for the Pirates. He currently has a 3.29 ERA and 44 strikeouts with the Double-A team. He is climbing the major league ladder fast. Both pitchers are young guys who get multiple strikeouts. Some people have even called Jordan Lyles an underdog.

It seems like the Milwaukee Brewers are just taking people from their farm team and trading them for average players. I wonder if that is their strategy for this trading period? With the deadline in less than three days, every team is going crazy.

The Pirates just released that Alex McRae is now going to start for them tonight because of this trade. Overall, do you think this was a good idea?
