There have been reports of interest from postseason contenders on San Diego Padres outfielders Hunter Renfroe and Franmil Reyes.

The San Diego Padres were in contention through the All-Star Break, but have slipped off so some players are becoming available including Hunter Renfroe and Franmil Reyes.

Postseason contenders have been eager to add power bats to bolster their lineups down the stretch and into October.

Marc Topkin reported this morning that the Tampa Bay Rays are interested in Reyes and Renfroe. He also added that the Padres may be more inclined to move Renfroe, but I believe he is wrong on that front.

More from Call to the Pen

Hunter Renfroe has developed defensively this season and has quickly become one of the best defensive outfielders in all of baseball on top of having a 28 HR season.

Therefore, the Padres should want to keep him, as he is controlled through the 2023 season and will be in the middle of a stacked lineup.

Reyes, on the other hand, has not really developed on the defensive side this season and so he would fit much better on an American League team like the Rays who have a Designated hitter spot for Reyes to fit right into.

I don’t believe either will end up being traded before Wednesday’s MLB Trade Deadline because it would be smarter for San Diego to go into the winter and try to use one of the outfielders in a trade for a starting pitcher like Noah Syndergaard, Corey Kluber or Trevor Bauer.

Tampa Bay does need a power bat in their lineup if they want to make it far into October, so although there isn’t a great chance for Reyes or Renfroe to be moved by Wednesday, there are still plenty of options.
