The Philadelphia Phillies are acquiring outfielder Corey Dickerson to an area they thought they took care of in the off-season.  Dickerson will help shore up the OF as they make a push towards the postseason.

The Philadelphia Phillies have made a move to shore up their outfield corps bringing in Corey Dickerson from the Pittsburgh Pirates for either cash considerations or international bonus pool money.

The Pirates continue their penny-pinching ways despite pushing some of their chips into the pot last off-season when they acquired Chris Archer (a deal that doesn’t look so great now).  I’m a little surprised the Pirates didn’t have interest in a low-A lottery ticket or some sort of flame thrower with command issues as they have had some success turning broken pitchers into valuable pieces.

After signing Andrew McCutchen and the Prize of the market, Bryce Harper to flank CF Odubel Herrera, the Phillies likely thought they had their outfield for 2019 and the future set.  Well, even the best battle plans ever make it through a War.  McCutchen got hurt, Herrera got suspended for domestic assault, and Harper has been underwhelming Phillies fans.

Enter Left Fielder Corey Dickerson.  This season, Dickerson is hitting .317/.376/.556 good for a 135 wRC+.  Dickerson can mash, something that the Phillies haven’t had much of from their outfield this season.  His glove isn’t great (-4 Defensive Runs Saved), but you’ll take the guy who can step into the middle of the lineup and nicely complement Rhys Hoskins, Jean Segura, and Bryce Harper. Overall, Dickerson has been worth 1.0 fWAR this season on the strength of his bat and will lock down LF for Phanatics as they chase a Wild Card berth.

The Phillies got substantially better today and all it cost them was cash.  As a big market team, this is a no-brainer of a deal and there’s no risk that they gave up any sort of prospect, major or sleeper.  The Pirates could have taken a flyer on a guy but chose salary relief instead.  Dickerson is an excellent hitter but is limited defensively so he was never going to fetch something big.  Nevertheless, the Phillies got an impact bat that could be the difference between playing baseball or golf in October.
