The San Diego Padres traded Logan Allen and fan-favorite Franmil Reyes to the Cleveland Indians in a 3-team trade with the Cincinnati Reds for Taylor Trammell. Fans are hating it but here is why the deal was smart for the Padres.

The San Diego Padres seemed to be going into the Trade Deadline looking for starting pitching and would be open to trading a corner outfield for it.

Well, they traded the corner outfielder to the Indians for… not Trevor Bauer but Taylor Trammell, who came from the Cincinnati Reds.

Bauer ended up going to Cincinnati and Logan Allen was also packaged with Franmil to Cleveland.

Immediately fans started hating the deal and saying GM A.J. Preller “choked” the trade but I don’t understand why Padres fans are mad at all.

San Diego traded an eventual DH and a back end of the rotation arm at best for a left-handed hitting speedy center fielder who gets on base.

I know Franmil Reyes was a fan favorite and was great in the clubhouse, this trade is strictly to improve the team on the field and Reyes has not developed defensively like Renfroe has, and he fits better on an American League team as a DH  and Cleveland was the one that wanted him.

The Padres had a right-handed heavy lineup with a hole in center field.

Manuel Margot has been solid defensively as always but has never been able to get on base consistently and Wil Myers never has looked comfortable in CF with the Padres this season.

Trammell fills the center filed hole and he has the ability to control the strike zone and has a “championship makeup” according to one evaluator.

While people are ripping the trade, they should be praising it. Although Logan Allen has some promising potential, he was in a team that would have been hard to crack the rotation next season with a projected 2020 rotation of MacKenzie Gore, Luis Patino, Chris Paddack, Garrett Richards, and Dinelson Lamet.

So, to say Allen didn’t have a great chance of being a starter in SD would be an understatement.

Plus, maybe the Padres never wanted Taylor Trammell and are going to flip him for Noah Syndergaard?
