Yahoo Sports MLB has confirmed that the Atlanta Braves have acquired Shane Greene from the Detroit Tigers. Here’s why it was a good move.

The Atlanta Braves blew a 2-run save opportunity about an hour and a half before the Trade Deadline against the Washington Nationals, and while that was happening they were growing traction on acquiring Shane Greene from the Detroit Tigers.

More from Call to the Pen

Greene currently has a 1.18 ERA this season and has another year of control after this season.

He was never going to be worth anything in Detroit because he was hardly ever getting the opportunity to close games because Detroit has had an unsuccessful season.

Greene will be a huge addition to Atlanta, as their bullpen was their major hole this year.

Luke Jackson was the closer, but he had a 3.60 ERA and only faced two batters on Wednesday before manager Brian Snitker pulled him for Sean Newcomb, who had only recorded one save this season.

The Braves bullpen will still not be one of the best in the league, but Atlanta has at least a reliever in Shane Greene who will stabilize the 9th inning when they have the lead.

After the Braves couldn’t close out their latest game vs the Nationals, that gave Detroit much more leverage in the trade because of Atlanta being much more impatient about adding bullpen help.

Another piece would help but the Braves have completed their deadline goal: to upgrade their bullpen and most specifically the closer role.
