Despite the New York Mets recent hot streak, their season is already overdue to their lazy bullpen and their remaining schedule that includes the Cubs and Dodgers.

Remember when the New York Mets were the most laughable franchise in all of baseball? Their manager cussed out a reporter because he said ‘See you tomorrow’. He had one foot out the door but somehow has not had the door hit him on the way out.

General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen reportedly threw a chair during a heated meeting after a game where their ace Jacob deGrom couldn’t come away with a win after a dominant performance because the bullpen couldn’t get a couple of outs.

Oh yeah, remember when the story came out of Van Wagenen managing games from his couch? He texted someone in Arizona to tell Mickey Callaway to take deGrom out of the game and then he tried to spin it off as an injury.

These events transpired in a span of about three weeks. They were literally the Lakers of the MLB.

Now let’s get to the actual team. Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil have been the only players who have produced offensively on a consistent basis (if you want to call his .259 average consistent).

McNeil has been much more consistent though as Alonso has already stuck out 128 times with a .260 average while Fernando Tatis Jr. is just quietly hitting .322 with an OPS of nearly 1.000.

The bullpen that is headlined by Edwin Diaz has been anything but solid.

These were the 2019 Mets and they still are the 2019 Mets.

But, with a twist to it. They added Marcus Stroman in the most confusing move of the Trade Deadline and didn’t even flip him to another team.

They also made the bad decision of not trading Zack Wheeler but instead traded Jason Vargas to the Phillies–who are currently ahead of them in the Wild Card standings.

Now, with that said since adding Stroman, they have been the hottest team in the game. They have won 6 consecutive games, 13 of their last 14 games and just 1/2 game out of a Wild Card spot.

If you just look at that, you would say they will make the playoffs but just look at the schedule. Every one of the last 14 games has been played against teams with a record under .500 so the team has not been tested.

New York has the third toughest schedule remaining with contending teams like the Nationals, Braves, Indians, Cubs, Dodgers, and Rockies still on their slate.

This team has so many holes like their bullpen and bottom half of the lineup, but they’ve gotten by because of their easy schedule.

Their schedule doesn’t get easier and are not going to make the playoffs.

The New York Mets are what I like to call “pretenders” not contenders.
