The San Francisco Giants cut Scooter Gennett yesterday only a month after he was traded to the team from the Cincinnati Reds.

Scooter Gennett is just a year removed from making his first All-Star game and having a career year with the Cincinnati Reds.  What happened to him that a year later he is being cut by the San Francisco Giants?

To be fair the sample size for this season has not been big, he has only played in 42 games all season long as he was recovering from a severe groin strain.  In those 42 games he slashed .226/.245/.323 with two home runs and 11 RBI’s.

To put that in perspective, last season he slashed .310/.357/.490 with 23 home runs and 92 RBI’s in 154 games.

That was his career year, so what happened?  Spring training happened this year and on March 22nd he sustained that severe groin strain.  I’m no injury expert, but I can imagine how much that type of injury would change me as a baseball player.

As with all muscle related injuries it is going to take some time to trust that the muscle has healed all the way.  Also that particular muscle is one you use every single day playing the infield.  It’s going to affect you as you field ground balls and run around turning double plays.

Now I’m not saying this is all in his head, but I really think it all comes down to the fact that he hasn’t been ready to play ball all the way.  It will be interesting to see how things go for the rest of the year.

I do believe he will be picked up by a team, possibly as a bat coming off the bench for a playoff contender and from there, who knows?

Next. Scooter Gennett could help Yankees in September. dark

He’s only 29 and I think he can come back and be the player who for his career is slashing .286/.327/.449 with season averages of 18 home runs and 74 RBI’s.
