New York Mets: Wilson Ramos extends hitting streak
New York Mets catcher Wilson Ramos extended his MLB-leading hitting streak last night against the Chicago Cubs to 22 games.
The catcher for the New York Mets, Wilson Ramos, extended his hitting streak to 22 games last night by going 2 for 4 against the Chicago Cubs. The crazy thing is this is baseball’s longest hitting streak this year.
During his hitting streak, Ramos is hitting .429 and had 38 hits this month. That hit total is the most by any catcher in the league.
Ramos is having a pretty good season slashing .292/.355/.421 with 13 home runs and 64 RBI’s in his 10th MLB season. The reason is no one in the league has cracked 40 straight games since 1978.

This begs the question as to what the state of baseball is when the longest hitting streak in a season is 22 games? Now granted Ramos could continue this streak to the end of the season as anything is possible. With 29 games left this season, that would put his streak at 51 games.
Now I don’t think that is going to happen. His streak may at most hit 30 games. I’m not saying New York Mets catcher Wilson Ramos isn’t a good hitter, just that most hitters in this day and age aren’t hitting to get base hits. The majority of them are hitting for power and it seems like it is mainly a home run or a strikeout.
This is the way baseball has evolved in the last few years, for better or worse. The record for longest hitting streaks belongs to the great New York Yankee Joe DiMaggio. He hit successfully in 56 straight games!
The closest any MLB player has come to beating that winning streak since DiMaggio set it is 44 games and that was achieved by Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds. This was the 1978 season and Rose’s 15th season in baseball. He slashed .302/.362/.421 with seven home runs and 52 RBI’s.

I think it is safe to say that DiMaggio’s record will probably stand the test of time. I don’t see anyone even getting close to breaking this record. No one has even cracked 40 since Rose’s season.
