As of Wednesday, New York Mets rookie Pete Alonso has 45 home runs. Can he beat Aaron Judge’s rookie home run record set in 2017?

Pete Alonso continues to make strides for the New York Mets and it looks familiar. Just like Aaron Judge in 2017, Alonso won the home run derby and currently has more than 100 RBI’s. Judge set the rookie record for home runs with 52 and with at least 23 games left for the Mets to play, it’s looking like Alonso has a good chance to break that record.

Of course, Judge did have a higher OBP, slugging percentage and WAR overall in 2017 than Alonso has so far in 2019. Both sluggers are humble and rally their teams when it comes down to it.

Judge is a game-changer for the Yankees and it looks like Alonso is doing the same for the Mets.

As for who the best rookie is, it all depends on your perception of what a great baseball player looks like.

Is it RBI’s? Is it home runs? Is it how hard they hit the home runs? Is it defense?

You may get sidetracked by the home run stat to not realize how well Alonso has done at first base.

Alonso sitting alone at the top of the league with his 45 home runs is extremely impressive. Most rookies are usually tied with someone. If Alonso stays at this pace, he could very well break Judge’s record and perhaps even exceed it.

Rest assured there’s no bad blood between the two athletes.

During the subway series at Citi Field, Judge told the New York Post that he was quick to praise Alonso because of the rookie season and what he has done for the New York Mets. Judge goes onto say that Alonso gives a spark to the Mets and the city in general.

Pete Alonso definitely reminds New York of the rookie Aaron Judge used to be, upbeat, talented, and makes his city proud.
