Boston has huge decision to make with Mookie Betts

More from Call to the Pen

We don’t know what happened behind the scenes, but what we do know is Dombrowski spent a lot of money after winning the championship last year, and ownership must have not been totally on board with it, especially after their mediocre season.

After the parade, Dombrowski spent $333 million for three players (Eovaldi, Sale, and Boegarts) and Boegarts has been the only one that has lived up to that contract, so ownership is more than likely not going to want to spend big money on in-house players.

But Mookie Betts is a different player. He just won an MVP last season and is still regarded as one of the best players in the game, but at the same time, it also means every team with a great farm system would be willing to acquire Betts.

Regardless of when the new President of Baseball Operations steps foot into Fenway Park, he will not be emotionally attached to Betts and will be doing what is best for the team in the future.

Even Betts said, “I love it here but definitely this is still a business.”

A trade seems the best route for Boston to go with Betts so they don’t lose him for nothing.

Dombrowski didn’t leave the Sox farm system in the best shape, and as I mentioned Boston doesn’t have a lot of wiggle room when it comes to spending money so if they do decide to give Betts the money he deserves, they will be handcuffed for the foreseeable future.
