Anthony Rizzo was supposed to be out the remainder of the season. That is, until he triumphantly returned to the Chicago Cubs lineup on Thursday.

The Chicago Cubs kicked off the most important series of games since they were down 3-1 to the Cleveland Indians in the 2016 World Series. Trailing in the division by 3 games and the wild card by 1/2 a game as the series started, the Cubs had a prime opportunity to put themselves back on top in the division and cement themselves in the postseason.

Anthony Rizzo was thought to be lost for the remainder of the season after a painful looking ankle sprain several days ago.  It was a major hit to the Cubs to be losing their Captain and most consistent bat for the remainder of September as they chased a playoff position.  But then Cubs twitter posted the lineup which caused everyone to do a double take.

How is that even possible?  Anthony Rizzo despite being hobbled with a terrible ankle sprain was in the lineup.  This man refuses to be stopped.  This man would rather hobble his ass out to first base on a bum ankle than sit in the dugout and watch.

Rizzo basically did his best Stone Cold impression returning despite having no business to do so.  Check out Wrigley when he came up to the plate:

As if that wasn’t good enough, Rizzo decided he can still drop tanks with one functioning leg and sent one direct to the bleacher creatures.

An oppo taco with one leg???? Anthony Rizzo is going to will the Cubs to the playoffs if it kills him.

I would note that I started writing this when the Cubs were tied 1-1 and could potentially capitalize and take the lead.  This was much less fun to watch/write when they were down by 3 in the 8th.  After underperforming against the Reds and Padres and likely dropping game 1 of a CRITICAL Cardinals series, the Cubs better figure it out in a hurry if they don’t want to end up golfing, basket weaving, and crocheting in early October.

dark. Next. Welcome to the show Nico Hoerner

The Chicago Cubs “dynasty” (fairly or not) comes down to these last seven (six remaining) games against the Cardinals.  If the Cubs end up bounced from the playoffs, it’s going to be another long winter in the Midwest this year.
