Mark Loretta played for the Padres from 2005-2008 and worked in their front office before being lured to be the bench coach of the Chicago Cubs.
Dave Martinez, the current manager of the Washington Nationals, was Joe Maddon’s bench coach before he got the Nats job and Loretta could follow suit with the Padres.
I am sure A.J. Preller and co would want to give him an interview to see if he is ready to manage and if he would want to lead his former team.
Loretta would be a good fit because he has had to be on a coaching staff this season that has high expectations with a sold-out crowd every home game, so he would be able to deal with the scrutiny and expectations for 2020 and beyond.
Some fans might think that Bruce Bochy would come back, but he is retiring at the end of the season and I don’t think he would want to manage again. Now, he could go to a front-office role, but I just don’t believe he wants to manage again, especially since he made the decision to retire at Spring Training, meaning he was good with his decision.
