San Diego Padres: Manny Machado wants his former manager back
If Manny Machado has his way, the San Diego Padres next manager will be a familiar face from his past.
Prior to his trade to the Dodgers last season, Manny Machado had only known one manager – Buck Showalter. He had been at the helm for each of Machado’s six and a half years in Baltimore, an era that saw a great run of success, but also saw the beginning of the Orioles descent into their current rebuilding status.
With Machado’s current team, the San Diego Padres, in search of a new manager, Machado has a candidate in mind. He is making it known that he would like the Padres to at least speak with Showalter, and possibly have a reunion in San Diego.
Although Showalter is 63 years old, he has expressed an interest in returning to the bench. Notably, he expressed a desire to be interviewed for the Mets managerial vacancy, an opening that has generated a lot of interest.

A long time manager, Showalter has an interesting track record when it comes to his managerial career. The former Yankees, Diamondbacks, Rangers, and Orioles manager has a lifetime 1551-1517 record, bringing his teams to the postseason five times.
And yet, Showalter is better known for what happened after he left. The Yankees and Diamondbacks both won the World Series the year after Showalter was removed as manager, giving him a reputation as someone that could bring a team to the cusp of contention, but was not capable of taking that next step.
The Padres could be the perfect fit for Showalter. While they are expected to contend shortly, they are still a young team that needs to continue to grow. Having a manager such as Showalter, who helped develop two World Series winning teams on the bench could make a major difference.
Manny Machado wants his former manager to join him on the San Diego Padres. He could be the perfect fit.
