Boston Red Sox star Mookie Betts could be on the trade block this offseason, so here are three possible contenders that could use his services.

Mookie Betts in a uniform other than the Boston Red Sox? I know, that seems really hard to believe but it is a scenario that could happen if Red Sox brass doesn’t want to pay Mookie Betts the money he deserves, which is going to be north of $300 million.

Dave Dombrowski was fired before season’s end, so although the Red Sox are just trying to fill their President of Baseball Operations chair, the question of whether they will extend Betts is one that will be looming over the franchise this winter.

Mookie Betts is going to be in Cooperstown with his own plaque if he keeps playing like he has the past few seasons, but there could be more than just one team in the description of the plaque because teams are going to want Betts on their team for a postseason push.

Whether they will extend him past 2020 is another question that is for another day but a one-year rental for Mookie Betts could be what takes them over the hump, which is winning the World Series.

With that said there are going to be contenders that are definitely going to be interested in Betts’ services if ownership makes him available, so here are the three most likely destinations that Mookie Betts could land if he were to be traded away from his current stomping grounds of Fenway Park….

3. Chicago Cubs

I know you might be thinking “Why would the Chicago Cubs trade for Mookie Betts when they are trying to get back to getting young players?”

And that is a legitimate question, but Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer would be dealing with an American League team, which means that they can give the Red Sox some big bats that could fit in as designated hitters.

Kyle Schwarber is going to be talked about in the trade market this season, and I wouldn’t pass it by Epstein to include Schwarber in a deal, especially for a talent that is a more consistent hitter and better fielder than Kyle is like Mookie Betts.

After all, Theo Epstein did draft Mookie back in 2011 when he was with the Red Sox, so he might be itching to get his player back with him.

I understand that the Cubs are locked into some bad contracts but this would be for one season and if the move means that they make it back to the promised land then I think it is worth it.

The next team could arguably be the most powerful team in the league…

2. Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers got upset by the Washington Nationals in the National League Division Series in five games, and part of that reason was because of the outfield production.

Cody Bellinger might win the National League Most Valuable Player award in 2019 but he should win the Least Valuable Player award for his postseason performance.

He recorded just four hits in five games with zero RBI, which is not what he should have done.

In the most important time of the year, their MVP disappeared.

But the narrative could change if Andrew Friedman decided to add Mookie Betts to the roster. Not only would they win more games, but he has already proven he can perform in the postseason and will make the Dodgers lineup a whole lot deeper.

One year of Mookie Betts would also line up with a majority of player’s contracts through 2020 and 2021, so it would make sense for a Betts addition.

The Dodgers have a very good farm system with players that come up annually that have shown they can perform in the big leagues. This year it was Will Smith and Gavin Lux, for example.

The Dodgers can’t deny they need an addition that can get them over the top and I think adding one of the best players in the game would do just that.

The next team also had a first-round exit and could use outfield help…

1. Atlanta Braves

Mookie Betts lives in Nashville, and the closest team to there is the Atlanta Braves. They were upset by a St. Louis Cardinals team that got swept by the Nats in the NLCS so I think the loss stings even more at SunTrust Park.

More from Call to the Pen

An outfield with the liked of superstars Ronald Acuna Jr. and Mookie Betts would certainly gain the attention of their fans to sell out the new ballpark.

There is a good mix of young players (Ozzie Albies and Ronald Acuna Jr.) and veterans (Freddie Freeman and Josh Donaldson), so Betts could fit right in the middle of that lineup, no problem.

Nick Markakis has completed his one-year deal he signed last offseason with the Braves and could be retiring so Mookie Betts would be able to slide right in and replace Markakis in right field.

The Braves have been arguably the most talented team outside of the Dodgers in the National League for a few years now, but they haven’t been able to score a lot of runs in the postseason but help could be on the way with Mookie Betts.

Next. Wright has one rough Friday. dark

An addition like Betts would make them the favorites in the National League, especially if Mike Soroka performs the way he did in his rookie season and if Mike Foltynewicz can pitch as he did in 2018.
