New York Yankees: Is it time to bring Gerrit Cole home?
The New York Yankees could have acquired Gerrit Cole before. Will they rectify that mistake this offseason?
Houston Astros star pitcher Gerrit Cole is having time of his life. Not only does he start game 1 of the World Series on Tuesday night, but many teams are also fighting to acquire him this off season. It should be interesting because one of those teams is the New York Yankees.
Many fans think that Cole will end up in pinstripes because he was drafted by them in 2008. He also happened to be a Yankee fan when he was younger. General manager Brian Cashman would most likely be interested in the Cy Young contender. Cole has an ERA of 2.50 and hasn’t lost a game since May 22nd.
He also just pitched seven shutout innings against the Yankees in Game 3 of the ALCS. Will Cashman pull the trigger though?

Let’s face it, Cashman is a great general manager but he doesn’t want to spend money on just anyone. Marcus Stroman was a hot rumor for the Yankees and Cashman let him just slip by and go to the Mets. Reportedly, it was because of money, but who knows.
There is the speculation that Cole could go the same way as CC Sabathia. Like Sabathia, Cole is a California native so it makes sense he would want to play for the Dodgers, Padres, or Angels. Sabathia ended up going to New York so maybe he will too.
Furthermore, we have to talk about the Yankees salary. If they extend DJ Lemahieu and add some more prospects that will take a chunk of their cash. They might not have enough to sign Cole unless they trade him for an ace. Didi Gregorius, Brett Gardner, and Dellin Betances all have contracts that are up at the end of 2019 so Cashman also has to think about replacing them. Another chunk of their money goes to Jacob Ellsbury who is still on the injured list.
Regardless of where he goes, it’s going to be quite an offseason for Gerrit Cole and the New York Yankees.
