Bill James announced his departure from the Boston Red Sox on Thursday. The vision of baseball he created will carry on for generations as the game continues to evolve.

It began as a young man’s curiosity with the measuring of baseball statistics. Now a former advisor and consultant to the Boston Red Sox Bill James released his first Baseball Abstract in 1977 and would release an annual edition for the next decade.

James’ delving into the underappreciated statistics became hated, misunderstood and even mocked by the traditionalists because it was ‘different’ or ‘excessive’. That was the exception of at least one team.

In 2002, James was hired by the Red Sox to help break the team’s ‘Curse of the Babe’ after having not won a World Series since trading the Hall of Fame slugger.

Two years later, the Red Sox were back on top. They would proceed to collect three more rings; most recently in 2018.

After a disappointing title-defense season, however – highlighted by the firing of President of Baseball Ops Dave Dombrowski – There is going to be more than just that change in the front office.

James announced on his website in an article titled ‘I’m Moving On’, Bill James is stepping away from his role.

He stated in his post that this is not a full-on retirement but rather a retirement from the Red Sox. He also stated his departure is on good terms with the organization and that he mirrored his departure to that of Bruce Bochy and Ned Yost.

James’ fame came from his books but additionally served as an inspiration to several front offices in their pursuit of creating baseball rosters that do the most to create runs. The other most notable organization to adopt James’ beliefs were the Oakland Athletics and it was specifically highlighted in the book Moneyball highlighting the 2002 Oakland A’s team.

James has represented the culture shift if you recognize in everyday baseball today. Analytics, stat-cast, the appreciation of the WAR statistic could be attributed to the work that fascinated James.

Very much will the legacy of James live on in baseball. He also said he is not done mentioning in his article that he has two more books he is working on.
