The Houston Astros owner, Jim Crane, admitted the team was wrong with how it handled the issue with their former associate general manager, Brandon Taubman.

For those of you who have been living under a rock, let me briefly recap what has happened here.  After the Houston Astros clinched the ALCS over the New York Yankees, some questionable behavior ensued in the clubhouse.

Stephanie Apstein, a reporter for Sports Illustrated, was part of a group of female reporters who were subjected to Taubman’s behavior.  He turned to this group and shouted “Thank God we got Osuna!  I’m so f—ing glad we got Osuna.”

Now, this is wrong on so many levels.  He was referencing the fact that the team acquired relief pitcher Roberto Osuna, who served a 75-game suspension for violating MLB’s domestic violence policy.

Unfortunately, this was only the tip of the iceberg when it came to how the Astros mishandled the situation.  They went on to accuse Apstein of fabricating a story, not to mention misleading and completely irresponsible.  To me, this is the worst part of everything.

I’m one of those guys who understands things happen and people make mistakes.  We all make mistakes and no one is immune from that.  The important part is what happens after the mistake and how you handle that mistake.

This is where the Astros organization failed.  After all of the backlash and several eyewitnesses corroborating Apstein’s story, did they decide they needed to terminate Taubman.  That happened on Thursday of last week.

Yesterday was the icing on the cake.  Apstein posted a letter from Crane, dated Saturday, October 26th almost a full week since the incident happened.  You can find a copy of the letter here from Apstein’s twitter feed here.

This should have happened immediately following the event followed by the disciplinary action for Taubman.  I for one hope the Astros have learned a valuable lesson from all of this and that they don’t allow history to repeat itself.
