As the New York Yankees begin their quest for a new pitching coach, here’s a candidate nobody has even considered: the GOAT, Pedro Martinez.

In the past, the New York Yankees had a love-hate relationship with Hall of Fame pitcher Pedro Martinez. So much so, that at points in his career, Pedro referred to the Yanks as his “daddies.”

I know, I know. He didn’t mean it in that sense. Instead, he was referring to the fact that in five postseason starts against the Bronx Bombers in 2003 and 2004 he posted a 0-2 record with a 9.47 ERA.

In the end, Martinez got the last laugh when the Boston Red Sox defeated the Yanks in the 2004 ALCS after being down three games to none.

Seriously though, Martinez would be the perfect candidate for Yanks pitching coach position for these three reasons.

First, he’s got valuable experience under his belt.

In his 18-year career, Martinez went from being doubted because of his size to establishing himself as perhaps the G.O.A.T. If nothing else, he has ownership of the greatest single-season (1999) for a starting pitcher ever.

Secondly, he’s got great rapport with a few Yankee pitchers, namely Luis Severino.

After working with the former ace and tweaking a few things prior to the 2018 MLB season, Severino was absolutely dominant. That year, in his first 20 starts, Sevy posted a 14-2 record with a 2.31 ERA.

Since then, injuries and suspicions that he was tipping his pitches have impeded the 25-year-old righty from returning to prominence.

The final reason why the Yanks should consider Pedro Martinez for pitching coach is that he has the desire to become a member of the team.

Again, I say this tongue in cheek, but there was a time when this was actually true. When asked if he ever wanted to play for the Yanks in a Bleacher Report live chat, Pedro responded:

"“I asked to be traded to the Yankees 3 times before I got to Boston…I was the last last one left on [Montreal’s] rotation and when I was asked where I wanted to be, at that exact moment [the] yankees were taking off, I wanted to be somewhere that I could win.”"

Well, the same can be said about the Yanks today.

They’re taking off, so if you want to be somewhere where you could win, there’s no better place than the Bronx.

The question is: does Pedro want the job?
