Today was a bittersweet day for veteran shortstop Didi Gregorius. As one door closes, another one opens and a new chapter with the Philadelphia Phillies begins.

It’s hard to imagine a better replacement for Derek Jeter than Didi Gregorius. He fit the role so perfectly while with the New York Yankees that fans barely missed the old captain. That is precisely why Joe Girardi, the new Philadelphia Phillies manager, pushed to get the veteran lefty on his team.

On Tuesday, according to Joel Sherman, the Phillies signed Didi to a one year deal worth $14M. The idea, according to MLB insider Jon Heyman, is for Gregorius to prove his worth for a multi-year deal after next season.

Prior to last season, Didi underwent Tommy John Surgery, which limited his playing tie. Upon his return, his game was negatively impacted both offensively and defensively. Many believed he rushed his return to New York in order to help the team make a postseason push.

By taking a 1-year deal, Didi will have an opportunity to prove that he is back to 100% and re-establish himself as one of the best shortstops in the game.

Heyman also reported that Gregorius may not be the only ex-Yankee to join forces with Girardi again. Free agents Dellin Betances and Austin Romine are also available and have also been linked to Philly.

Gregorius’ time in New York is highlighted by his clutch postseason performance in 2017. Headed up by a game-tying 3-run home run in the Wild Card game against the Minnesota Twins, Didi later hit a pair of home runs off of Corey Kluber in the clinching game of the ALDS.
