Anthony Rendon is headed to the Los Angeles Angels, but he is not the final piece to the puzzle with more holes on the roster.

Anthony Rendon is going to make the Los Angeles Angels a whole lot better, and I don’t see how pitchers are going to get past the Mike Trout, Anthony Rendon combination in the lineup.

But with that said Rendon can only do so much at third base, and although he does a lot they need to upgrade the rotation–and in a big way.

MLB Network insider Joel Sherman has reported that the Angels are pursuing Hyun-Jin Ryu, Madison Bumgarner, and Dallas Keuchel in free agency but the reality is they will only be getting one of them.

More from Call to the Pen

This year they had the American League’s worst rotation ERA, and Billy Eppler is not going to want Andrew Heaney or Griffin Canning pitching on Opening Day.

Dylan Bundy was the only starter in the race to be in the rotation to throw more than 100 innings in 2019, which means that they need to find a durable starter on the market.

I think the Rendon addition is going to halt their spending in the near future, but there is still one fit for the Angels: Dallas Keuchel.

Keuchel fits the best out of the remaining big three starters because he has a high ground ball rate and is likely going to cost the least amount of money.

I think Keuchel is also going to see what the Angels are doing, and he is going to find Anaheim a much more appealing place to be after the Anthony Rendon signing.

Anthony Rendon is big step towards contention, but the Houston Astros are still the heavy favorites in the American League West and the Oakland Athletics are good every year so they will be in the Wild Card race again.

So, if the Angels want to be where the Astros have been for years, they need to fill their biggest priority and that is starting pitching.
