Colorado Rockies: Nolan Arenado situation souring
On the same day the Colorado Rockies’ GM announced the team has no intentions of trading its star, Nolan Arenado made his first comments about his situation and he’s not happy.
Monday the Colorado Rockies GM, Jeff Bridich announced they would not be trading Nolan Arenado and would start the season with their All-Star third baseman. That announcement should have had Rockies fans celebrating in the streets.
Unfortunately, Arenado decided to let the public know his feelings about his situation in the Mile High City. He talked about how he feels disrespected by the organization. When pressed into what specifically he was feeling disrespected about, he said he wouldn’t get into the details.

He also mentioned it is not because of all of the trade rumors, but that there is more to it. This situation just took a turn for the worse. Arenado is entering the second year of his big 8-year, $260 million deal.
This leaves us to speculate as to why Arenado is so unhappy with his situation. Let’s go back to when the Rockies signed him last off-season. The team was coming off of back-to-back playoff appearances and seemed poised to keep improving.
Flash forward to this off-season and the Rockies have done absolutely nothing. Pretty much the only time you have heard the team mentioned is when they are linked to another MLB team with interest in acquiring Arenado’s services. No free agent signings or trades to help improve the team, the team which finished 71-91 last season.
This could be a major reason behind Arenado feeling disrespected, he has made it clear he would like to see the team improve and he has every right to want to continue to win. This is a guy whose career slash line looks like this: .295/.351/.546 with 227 home runs and 734 RBI’s.
I really see both sides of this story. The Rockies didn’t feel like making moves this off-season was feasible. They already have a high payroll coming into the year and are looking for their current players to improve as opposed to spending more money in order to make a serious postseason run.
Also, Nolan Arenado wants to play for a contender and if the Colorado Rockies aren’t willing to build around him by bringing in more talent, he’s going to want to play somewhere else. Regardless the Rockies are being backed into a corner and something tells me this is going to get worse before it gets better.
