After a quiet offseason, the Los Angeles Dodgers have quickly made up for lost time. Their latest move involves an extension for Max Muncy.

The questions about the Los Angeles Dodgers offseason have been answered this week. With their pending blockbuster acquisition of Mookie Betts and David Price, as well as a second trade sending Joc Pederson to the Angels, the Dodgers have shaken off the winter doldrums. They quickly reestablished their status as the dominant team in the NL West, and in all likelihood, the division.

However, the Dodgers are not done. On Thursday, Los Angeles extended infielder Max Muncy, signing him to a three year deal worth $26 million, along with an option for 2023 for an additional $13 million.

This extension provides the Dodgers with cost certainty as they essentially bought out his three remaining arbitration seasons, and possibly one year of free agency. In doing so, the front office now has a number in place for their own budgeting purposes.

For Muncy, this extension is a testament to his perseverance. He had struggled during his brief time in Oakland, appearing in 96 games over two seasons for the Athletics as he bounced between the majors and AAA. He was released at the end of spring training in 2017, signing a minor league deal with the Dodgers approximately a month later.

After spending the entire 2017 campaign in the minors, Muncy broke out as a star in Los Angeles. In his two seasons with the Dodgers, he has produced a .256/.381/.545 batting line, hitting 70 homers and 39 doubles. He has also provided excellent defense around the infield, saving a total of 17 runs last year between first, second, and third.

At 29 years old, the Dodgers have locked Muncy in for what should be the majority of his prime. Even if he does not become anything more than what he is, the Dodgers still have a solid player – a versatile infielder that can hit for power, play respectable defense, and get on base. Chances are, he would have ended up being worth more than the $26 million he will receive over the next three seasons.
