Freddie Freeman had surgery on his elbow during the offseason and the Atlanta Braves will keep a watchful eye on easing him back into action.

Freddie Freeman is an essential part of the Atlanta Braves lineup and a stalwart at first base. They cannot afford to have him out of the lineup for any extended period of time. As he recovers from surgery to remove a bone spur from his elbow they are taking his recovery slowly.

Freeman was slated to get the start at first base Wednesday before being scratched in favor of Yonder Alonzo.

Freeman has reported some swelling in his elbow, though Dr. David Altcheck, who performed the operation, says such swelling is normal. The Braves will take every precaution necessary to ensure their first baseman is 100% before allowing him to take more reps this spring. He has played in two games thus far and has one hit in four plate appearances.

The four-time All-Star has been a mainstay in the Braves lineup the past ten years. Twice he has lead the league by playing in all 162 games and twice he has played in 158 games, including the 2019 season. The Braves do not want him to tweak his elbow in meaningless spring games, therefore, they will watch him carefully to ensure he heads north with a healthy elbow.

The Atlanta Braves front office is not concerned about the elbow and neither is Freddie Freeman. This will not be a long-term issue and after the swelling subsides Freeman will have his full range of motion back.

Surely Freeman won’t need too many spring training at-bats to get back into his hitting rhythm. One thing is for sure he is a vital clog in the hitting machine the Braves run out every day. Expect Freddie Freeman to be homering in a ballpark near you very soon.
