The Los Angeles Dodgers took a chance on Jimmy Nelson. Unfortunately, the injury bug is continuing to sting.

Jimmy Nelson was the perfect lottery ticket for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Before he injured his shoulder diving into first base in 2017, Nelson appeared to be emerging as a possible ace. However, after making just ten appearances over the following two seasons, the Brewers cut bait with the promising pitcher, giving the Dodgers an intriguing free agent find.

Unfortunately, the injury bug has found Nelson in his new surroundings. He has been shut down for the time being, as his groin muscle was problematic once again following a bullpen session.

While the Dodgers likely were not expecting much, they were hoping he could recapture the form he displayed in 2017. That year, Nelson posted a 12-6 record, with a career best 3.49 ERA and a 1.249 WHiP. In his 175.1 innings, he struck out 199 batters with just 48 walks.

After missing the entire 2018 season, Nelson was beset by setbacks in his attempt to return to the mound. Nelson would eventually make ten appearances, with three starts, in 2019, but the returns were not what anyone had hoped for. In his 22 innings, Nelson struck out 26 batters, but that was about the only positive. He allowed 18 runs, 17 earned, on 25 hits and 17 walks, looking nothing like the pitcher he had been before injuring his shoulder.

Yet, there is that success in 2017. Nelson showed a glimpse of the pitcher he could be if healthy, a possible difference maker atop a starting rotation. That intriguing season certainly piqued the Dodgers interest, with his low cost making him the perfect lottery ticket.

Of course, for Nelson to pay off, he will need to find his way to the mound. The Dodgers are hoping that this latest setback is just a minor issue and that he will be able to continue working his way back soon. Likewise, Los Angeles does not need Nelson to rush, as they have enviable rotation depth as it is. Nelson is a potential luxury item at a bargain basement cost.
