Before being whitewashed by Castillo, the Phillies extended their winning streak with a pair of mid-week victories over the Toronto Blue Jays. Vince Velasquez delivered five strong innings during Tuesday’s 6-2 decision, while backup catcher Andrew Knapp doubled and homered for three RBIs in an 8-7 win Wednesday.
The Braves lost two of three at home to San Diego, then went to Miami and won the opener of a four-game weekend series with the Marlins. Fernando Tatis’ four-hit day, including two home runs, carried the Padres to an 8-7 win in 12 innings on Monday Tatis’ second home run, in the ninth, tied the game 7-7, then in the 12th Wil Myers doubled home Eric Hosmer with the eventual winner.
The Padres won the Tuesday game 5-2 on eight strong innings from Chris Paddack. Atlanta avoided a sweep Wednesday, lighting up Dinelson Lamet for seven runs in four innings on the way to an 11-6 win. Ronald Acuna Jr. homered and drove in four runs.
Miami took two of three in Washington. Jose Urena beat Stephen Strasburg 6-5 on Monday, getting the winning run in the top of the ninth when Harold Ramirez doubled off Will Harris and came home on Lewis Brinson’s base hit.
The Nats evened the series 10-1 on Tuesday behind Starlin Castro’s two homers and four RBIs. But on Wednesday, Jordan Yamamoto went pitch-for-shutout pitch with Max Scherzer for six innings and the Marlins scored the game’s only two runs in the top of the ninth off Daniel Hudson. The runs came on hits by Miguel Rojas and Isan Diaz.
