Seattle Mariners: The franchise all-time bracket

No. 3 vs. 6 seed

In 2003 the Mariners finished second behind the Oakland Athletics and two games out of the wild card. Suzuki only managed a .312 average. But that was still good enough to lead the team  One season away from retirement, Martinez batted .294 as DH with 24 homers and 98 RBIs.

Moyer, another 40-year-old, was 21-7 in 33 starts to head the pitching staff.

The 2018 Mariners finished third in the AL West, eight games out of the second wild-card spot but still with an 89-73 record. DH Nelson Cruz slammed 37 homers and drove in 97 runs as the big power threat, but the team produced five 20-plus home run guys.

Hernandez tailed off to 8-14, but Mike Leake, Marco Gonzalez and James Paxton picked up some of the slack. Edwin Diaz established his closer’s reputation, saving 57 games.

Game 1: The 200e Mariners had the better of it in the regular season. Their 93-69 record is a .574 percentage. In 2018 the mariners were 89-73 .549.

Game 2: We have a double forfeit since neither team played a post-season game.

Game 3: The 2003 Mariners produced a 103 team OPS+, a bare point better than 2018’s 102.

Game 4: The 2003 team’s 115 ERA+ is clearly superior to the 2018 club’s 99.

Game 5: In 2003 the Mariners amassed 50.1 WAR. The 2018 Mariners only reached 35.9 WAR.

Result: 2003 in five games (one tie)
