Colorado Rockies: “Fast Eddy” is looking to move up through the minors
Eddy Diaz is looking to run through the Colorado Rockies system, and may well be the shortstop of the future.
Eddy Diaz was the first investment in the Cuban market by the Colorado Rockies and that investment hasn’t turned out that bad so far. The native of Matanzas signed with the Rockies in 2017 for 750 K.
The 19 year old is known as “Fast Eddy” by the ball club has stolen 104 bases in his first three minor league season. Last season in the Pioneer League with Grand Junction he slashed .331/.366/.440, stole 20 bases and had a wRC+ of 114. Although he struck out in18.6 % of his at bats, he still had a BABIP of .414.
Díaz is very likely the shortstop of the future in Colorado for the time being and could be a premier base stealer in the big leagues for years to come.
In your three years in the minors you’ve stolen 104 bases with Colorado. How have you perfected your technique during this time?
Well, my mentality when I get on base is to be very aggressive, I want to steal second by any means. I’m always aware of the catcher’s movements and the pitchers delivery time to the plate. I watch plenty of video on my opponents and this has aided me when it comes to their tendencies. Knowing their tendencies and timing helps me plenty when I’m on the base paths.
You are very disciplined at the plate. When you come to the plate what is your plan of attack?
Well that depends on the pitcher I’m facing, like I said I watch plenty of film on my opponents so I can adjust to who I’m facing. The key is to use my legs and hit the ball on the ground, preferably up the middle.
What is your goal for the season?
My goal is to become a better player. I want to discover different things that I could do and expand my game. I want to better my mental approach to the game and try to earn also earn a spot in the Future’s Game.
How have you stayed in shape during the stoppage in play?
I have been at home doing calisthenics and fielding ground balls. I’ve also been hitting black beans and chick peas to keep my swing and vision in order.
What level will you start this season at?
I’m going to start the season at A ball but I’m determined to finish the season at A+.
You made your way into Colorado’s top 30 prospects, what’s the next step for Eddy Díaz?
Well first of I’m going to keep grinding and working hard, but the ultimate goal is to make MLB’s top 100 prospects.
