The fans’ favorite MLB opposition player: A Twitter study

Surpise, Surprise…

The first result of this highly scientific study was that the earliest replies – shockingly – were heavily oriented towards that supposedly dying sport, baseball.

People were somewhat instantly compelled to declare they would buy MLB opposition-player jerseys in impressively higher numbers than professional football, basketball, or hockey opponents’ gameday garb.

I was able to fill out my primitive grid far more quickly than anticipated. When I stopped, Vitelli had merely 110 replies – ballpark 7:30 p.m., May 1, after his 5:47 p.m. tweet.

In other words, people were quickly willing to say they’d commit up to 250 dollars on jerseys for numerous MLB players not on their favorite teams. Fans seem to easily acknowledge an MLB opposition player as quite good.

Oh, of course, they won’t buy the jerseys. This was a Twitter survey – meaningless – something people need to consider as it relates to certain politicians, but I digress.

It isn’t entirely meaningless, however, since a randomization method was applied, and the poll shows something interesting about a player some people have said is too reticent about engaging the public for the sake of promoting the game: Mike Trout.
