When Nathan Eovaldi strong-armed the Rangers into submission Friday, it looked like Boston might be in for a good weekend. Eovaldi allowed just Todd Frazier’s double in his seven innings, fanning eight although he also walked seven. Equally important, the first five hitters in the Red Sox lineup all homered in a 9-1 rout.
Things did not work out. A six-run Texas sixth off Collin McHugh and Ryan Brasier erased an 8-3 Boston lead, and Rougned Odor’s second home of the game in the 11th gave Texas the 10-9 decision. One day later Frazier touched Martin Perez for a three-run homer in the seventh and Mike Minor picked up the 5-3 win, his sixth of the season.
The Mariners continued to dig their way out of their horrible April, sweeping the visiting Detroit Tigers in Seattle. Kendall Graveman’s eight innings led a 6-0 Friday shutout in which Kyle Seager and Daniel Vogelbach both homered.
Seattle won 4-1 on Saturday behind Justin Dunn’s strong seven innings. He allowed just two hits, one a Harold Castro home run. Evan White homered twice for the Mariners. Seattle completed the sweep 4-2 Sunday, Erik Swanson evening his record at 4-4.
Since falling to 9-30 in early May, the Mariners have won eight of their last 10 games.
