2020 MLB Season: Simulating AL games (May 25-28)

American League Central

Coming off that 5-2 Monday defeat that cost them an even split of their weekend series in New York, the Mariners won the showdown between the AL’s two worst teams in Detroit.

The Mariners looked like anything but tail-enders Tuesday, administering a 17-1 thrashing to Tiger starter Matt Boyd and five relievers. Since Boyd left after just two innings having allowed only one run, it was the relievers who absorbed most of the punishment.

David McKay was a particular favorite, working three innings during which 25 batters tapped him for 14 hits, two walks, three home runs, and 10 earned runs. McKay’s ERA was 3.54 when he entered the premises and 6.94 when he left.

Detroit hung on for a 2-1 win Wednesday behind Tyler Alexander, who stopped the Mariners on three hits. Dawel Lugo drove in the only two runs Alexander would need with a first-inning single. Bu the Mariners bounced back Thursday, winning 8-4 thanks in part to Shed Long’s pinch-hit, bags-clearing double in the eighth that erased a 3-2 Tiger lead.

In Baltimore, the Orioles and White Sox staged a spirited four-game series that ended up breaking evenly. Baltimore won a 4-3 12-inning game Monday when Austin Hays’ third double of the game drove in Jose Iglesias, who had singled.

The Orioles also took the series wrapup, again by one run, each team scoring twice in the ninth. D J Stewart’s second home run, off Alex Colome, pushed home his fifth and sixth RBIs of the game in walk-off fashion. Stewart had hit a fourth-inning grand slam.

The White Sox took the middle two games. Chicago won 11-6 Tuesday behind Gio Gonzalez, 5-4, thanks in part to home runs by Yoan Moncada, Edwin Encarnacion, and Eloy Jimenez. Dylan Cease, 3-2, pitched seven innings Wednesday, and Jose Abreu hit his 21st home run.
