Taking a look at each of the Boston Red Sox’s selections in the 2020 MLB Draft.

The 2020 MLB Draft was the first of its kind, completed in just 5 rounds. With such few picks compared to the standard 40 round draft it made every pick seem more important. For the Boston Red Sox this was even more of a reality as their second-round pick was taken away in the MLB’s sign-stealing investigation.

Teams are certainly not done adding young talent through undrafted free agents, but the 5 rounds of selections are over. Here we will take a look at each of the Red Sox selections:

More from Call to the Pen

Boston Red Sox first pick, the 17th pick in round 1: Second baseman, Nick Yorke.

The Red Sox went with a bit of a surprise with their first selection, but not without reason. The Sox took 2B Nick Yorke out of Archbishop Mitty HS who was not even in the top 100 of many of the draft prospect rankings.

The Red Sox felt this was a player they really wanted and didn’t feel he’d be left in round 3. Taking Yorke this early also left the Sox with more money to spend in round 3 on the signing bonus.

Yorke projects as an “elite hitter” according to his Perfect Game profile. This shows in his Perfect Game profile as he ranked in over the 80th percentile in all hitting categories of Exit Velocity, Max Barrel Speed, Impact Momentum, and Max Acceleration.

From all his profiles and scouting reports, he projects as an offensive player. Whether he stays at 2B remains a question, but if this pick pans out for the Sox it seems they’ve got a potential impact bat here in Nick Yorke.
