In the wake of positive COVID-19 tests on the Atlanta Braves, Felix Hernandez opted out of the 2020 season. This may be the end of his reign.

Saturday had begun like any other day for Felix Hernandez. He had gotten to the ballpark and threw a side session, putting in his work to get ready for the upcoming season. Then came the announcements that four players on the Atlanta Braves had tested positive for COVID-19, including Freddie Freeman, who is battling symptoms and feeling as though he was hit by “a ton of bricks.”

Obviously, those announcements made an impact upon Hernandez. He departed the facility after that side session, returning home as his agent tweeted out that the righty has decided to opt-out of the 2020 season.

Hernandez had a solid showing during the first part of spring training. In his 13.2 innings, he had allowed just three runs on 13 hits and five walks, striking out 14 batters. While he may not have been the ace he once was, it appeared as though he could be a solid option in the back of the Braves rotation.

That performance was a positive sign in light of the past few years. Over the past three seasons, Hernandez had posted a 15-27 record, along with a 5.42 ERA and a 1.401 WHiP. Over his 314 innings, he had issued 110 walks with just 260 strikeouts. He simply was not the pitcher he once was, as the innings have piled up on his arm.

Hernandez will also be 35 years old in 2021. While the year off may do wonders and allow him to pitch well once again, Hernandez is already firmly on the backside of his career. He had to settle for a minor league deal this offseason after tepid interest.

After a year away from the game, and minimal success in the majors over the previous three years, it is fair to wonder what, if any, interest he will receive in free agency next season. It may be that his four appearances in March for the Braves are the end of the line.

If so, the former Mariners ace had a solid career. Over his 15 year career, he posted a 169-136 record, along with a 3.42 ERA and a 1.206 WHiP, striking out 2524 batters. He was a six time All Star, led the league in ERA twice, and took home the 2010 AL Cy Youn award. Hernandez was a major influence on young pitchers in Latin America, an idol that they emulated.

But now, it may be the end of the line for Felix Hernandez. The reign of King Felix may have come to an end as he is sitting out the 2020 season.
