Buster Posey opts out of 2020 season for good reason
San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey has become the latest player to opt-out of the 2020 MLB season, and for a very good reason.
As players had begun to opt-out of the 2020 MLB season, others had been vocal about their concerns with the season moving forward. The likes of Mike Trout and Buster Posey, amongst others, expressed their thoughts about the league rushing back to action amidst an uptick in the pandemic.
On Friday, the San Francisco Giants catcher became the latest player to decide to opt-out of the 2020 MLB season. As it turned out, he had a very good reason for both his skepticism of playing this year, and his refusal to do so.
While both twins are currently in the neonatal intensive care unit, they are in stable condition. Although Posey did mention his concerns from a baseball standpoint, and his desire to help the Giants, the health and safety of his growing family came first.
Posey is now the second member of the Giants to opt-out of the season. After his brother opted out, Tyson Ross also chose to forgo the upcoming season, although he had already been released prior to that decision being made.
From a purely baseball standpoint, Posey is a major loss for the Giants lineup. Although he is no longer a perennial MVP candidate, he still possesses a solid bat and a strong arm behind the plate. Yet, as he produced a career worst .257/.320/.368 batting line, with 24 doubles and seven homers. Taking the year off could allow Posey to return to form, especially as he avoids the wear and tear of this season.
But this is about more than baseball. It is a matter of Posey keeping his family safe and healthy. As his newborn twins are in a fragile state currently, the next four months are crucial to their long term health. While he may want to play, this was not a risk that Posey could take.
Buster Posey has decided to opt-out of the 2020 MLB season. In the end, it was not a difficult decision to make.
