Kansas City Royals youth movement continues with Brady Singer
The Kansas City Royals are continuing their youth movement, as Brady Singer has officially been activated to start on Saturday.
At some point, the Kansas City Royals would begin their youth movement. They had the beginnings of a young, potentially impressive, rotation in the minors, all of whom would have likely made their debuts during a normal 2020 campaign. Instead, due to COVID-19, that ascension to the majors was expected to be delayed.
That will not be the case for at least one of those arms. Impressive pitching prospect Brady Singer has been activated by the Royals and will make his debut on Saturday.
In his place, the Royals sent Ronald Bolanos, who had just been acquired in the Tim Hill trade, down to the taxi squad. With an impressive fastball of his own, Bolanos may see some action in the majors this year as well.
But this moment is about Singer. The 18th overall selection in the 2018 MLB Draft, he has just 26 minor league appearances to his name, all of which came last season. He impressed in that time, posting a combined 12-5 record with a 2.85 ERA and a 1.187 WHiP over his 148.1 innings between the Carolina League and Texas League. He struck out 138 batters and issued just 39 walks as he overmatched the minors.
The activation of Singer continues the beginnings of the Royals youth movement. Tyler Zuber, a highly regarded relief prospect, made his debut with two scoreless innings on Friday. Even with the shortened season, the Royals are determined to get their prospects exposure to the majors, and possibly accelerate the rebuilding process.
Singer’s debut will be interesting to watch. Of his 148.1 innings last season, just 90.2 of those had come at the AA level. While he may well have been pitching in the majors by this time in a regular season, he would also have seen action at AAA. It is hard to say if Singer is ready for the majors or not at this point.
Nonetheless, the Kansas City Royals believe in their prospect. Ready or not, Brady Singer will be thrown into the fire, as the Royals youth movement continues to move forward.
