MLB: Three players that deserve more recognition
By David Hill
German Marquez
It takes a rare type of MLB pitcher to be able to succeed in Colorado. German Marquez is exactly that.
A cursory glance at his overall numbers are not exactly mind boggling. Over the course of his career, the 25 year old has posted a 39-25 record, along with a 4.26 ERA and a 1.262 WHiP, striking out 581 batters with 151 walks in 564.1 innings. Those are solid numbers, but not the type that would lead anyone to think there was a star in the making.
But those numbers come with the Coors Field caveat. Marquez has made 45 of his career appearances in Colorado, making those career totals all the more impressive. Likewise, that has led to a 7.9 fWAR since the start of 2018, ahead of the likes of Jose Berrios and Clayton Kershaw.
Given his relative youth, it is entirely possible that Marquez is just scratching the surface. If he can continue to improve, Marquez could easily rank as the best pitcher in Rockies history. He already ranks eighth in franchise history in fWAR, and is just 8.1 fWAR behind Ubaldo Jimenez.
German Marquez has been a successful pitcher for the Colorado Rockies. That alone is enough to earn some recognition from MLB fans.
