The St. Louis Cardinals’ schedule is set to get even more complicated, as their upcoming series with the Pittsburgh Pirates has been postponed.

It was seemingly inevitable that the St. Louis Cardinals series with the Pittsburgh Pirates would be in jeopardy. There were more positive tests for COVID-19 on the Cardinals as the virus continued to spread through the organization. Not enough time had passed for the virus to be contained.

On Saturday night, the inevitable happened. The Cardinals series against the Pittsburgh Pirates was postponed, with the Cardinals not likely to begin play until Thursday at the earliest.

The Cardinals have not played a game since July 29, a 3-0 loss to the Minnesota Twins. And now, the earliest that they will get on the diamond will be on Thursday, provided that their outbreak is under control by that time.

As it currently stands, we know some of the Cardinals players that tested positive. They are without catcher Yadier Molina, starting shortstop Paul DeJong, and his backup, Edmundo Sosa, amongst others, will be out of the lineup for the foreseeable future.

At least the Cardinals are not at the same area that the Marlins were. To this point, they have not needed to make a flurry of trades to even find AAA players to fill out the roster. With just nine players testing positive, the Cardinals should be able to manage a somewhat competitive roster.

But that does not mean that Thursday is in any way assured. The Cardinals still need to manage to go without any more positive tests before they are cleared to play again. At this point, Thursday is the best case scenario, but that could change in another day or two.
