Texas Rangers: Lance Lynn pitching way into Cy Young conversation
With the way he has been pitching in the early going, Lance Lynn of the Texas Rangers is making a strong case for Cy Young consideration.
How about the start Lance Lynn is off to this year? What about the performance he put together on the road, at Coors Field nonetheless? With a performance worthy of a 1980s stat line, Lynn is proving to be the Texas Rangers most valuable pitcher again this year.
One which will surely garner him a few Cy Young votes come the end of the year.
Five games into the season he’s 3-0 with a 1.11 earned run average. Lynn has thrown 32 innings and surrendered just 12 hits. 12 hits!
His encounter with the Colorado Rockies, and Charlie Blackmon, who is flirting with hitting .400 on the season, was another example of a pitcher outdueling hitters.
Blackmon took the collar for the night, as did several of his teammates, as Lynn scattered just two hits over nine innings.
Yes, nine innings. A nine-inning complete game. An oddity in this day and age of baseball.
Coming into the night there have been five complete games, though two came in a rain shortened, five inning affair.
The difference between Lynn’s “going the distance” and the three others, Lance was pitching in a one-run game. He ended the game with 110 pitches. Both these feats are rare in the specialty pitcher and watch the pitch count/pitch limit era we are now accustomed to as baseball fans.
Lynn has been so durable for the Rangers this year he forced his way back onto the field with his play.
The complete game for Lance Lynn was one thing. The fact he only allowed two hits, didn’t walk a guy, allowed just one earned run, and was allowed to take the mound in the ninth inning was monumental. That is just how dominant Lynn was on this night, and has been this season.
If Lynn can keep these feats up he is looking at having a truly historic season. One which may end with him winning the Cy Young Award.
