In the wake of his homophobic remarks earlier in the day, Thom Brennaman issued an apology and admitted that he may be wearing the headset for the last time.

Thom Brennaman’s time with the Cincinnati Reds is likely measured in minutes at this point. After his clearly homophobic remarks during the Reds game with the Royals, one had to wonder if he would even finish the second game of the doubleheader before being fired.

This is something that Brennaman himself realizes. He issued an on-air apology for his remarks and admitted that he may never put the headset on again.

Brennaman was also removed from game, with Jim Day taking over the play-by-play for the rest of the contest. One would have to imagine that Brennaman will not be back any time soon.

This is something that he is at least aware of. One had to wonder exactly how much awareness Brennaman even had after those remarks were uttered. Whether or not he thought his mic was off, he had to know that saying something like that could easily be recorded, let alone broadcast for everyone to hear.

And with those words, the Brennaman Family legacy in Cincinnati may be over. Marty Brennaman had been the team’s broadcaster from 1974 until his retirement in 2019. Thom took over the family business, but his time replacing his father may have lasted for just 22 games.

It would be a shock if he did put that headset on again. Brennaman had not been a favorite amongst the fans in his brief time behind the mic, and these comments only enflamed that disdain. His homophobic remarks have no place in the game, especially given the current social and political climate.
