The Chicago White Sox have added a solid depth option with postseason experience in Jarrod Dyson.

As it stands, the Chicago White Sox outfield is relatively set. Luis Robert, Eloy Jimenez, and Nomar Mazara are entrenched in the lineup, with Adam Engel on hand as a backup at all three positions. However, as both Jimenez and Mazara can be questionable defensively, another defensive minded option as a backup could not hurt.

The White Sox front office apparently felt the same way. On Friday, they acquired Jarrod Dyson from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

In exchange, the Pirates are expected to get international signing bonus money, which could help the organization restock a mediocre farm system.

Dyson is not the player that he once was. A valued catalyst during his time in Kansas City, his production has plummeted in recent years. This season has been an utter disaster, as Dyson had produced a .157/.218/.157 batting line in 55 plate appearances. He still has solid speed, with four steals and six runs scored, but his bat is essentially done.

But Dyson was not acquired for his bat. While his being a left handed hitter will allow the White Sox to give Engel more of a platoon advantage when they want to give an outfielder a day off, Dyson seems to have a more specific role. He should slot in as a defensive replacement and pinch runner, someone that can help the White Sox in the later innings.

Dyson also has an intangible to him. He now becomes one of the few players on the roster that has playoff experience, having been through the battles to win a championship. That experience, and leadership, can be invaluable.
