New York Mets circus keeps on trucking along

New York Mets ownership can heap praise upon Rob Manfred all they want, but that does not change a tweet from one of their official accounts.

On Thursday night, all hell broke loose when it came to the New York Mets and Rob Manfred. A ‘leaked’ video showed general manager Brodie Van Wagenen torching MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, stating that he “doesn’t get it.” Mets ownership fell all over themselves to heap praise upon baseball’s Glorious Leader and to criticize Van Wagenen (even spelling his name wrong) as soon as they possibly could.

The problem is, the Wilpon’s forgot about another official Mets account, which had also called for the firing of Manfred.

The tweet is gone now, and the Mets refuse to acknowledge it. As Sgt. Schultz once said “I know nothing! I see nothing!”

The Mets have been a circus for years, with squabbles amongst ownership and an embarrassing descent into mediocrity. That starts from the top, where the owners have continually found new ways to embarrass themselves and have refused to open the vault to get that one last piece that will help towards a playoff push.

This season has been ridiculous as well. Excluding Van Wagenen’s video, there was the entire Yoenis Cespedes debacle when he opted out of the season without telling anyone. Marcus Stroman spent just enough time on the Injured List to enter free agency before opting out. Carlos Beltran was manager, then fired before even getting to spring training because of his role in AstroGate.

But this should not be a surprise. After all, these are the owners that were forced to sell a portion of the team after being swindled by Bernie Madoff. And, let us reiterate that neither Wilpon could spell Brodie correctly.

It also should not be a surprise that the Wilpon’s would stick up for Manfred. The current commissioner has been an embarrassment himself, to the point where one has to question if he even enjoys the game that he is in charge of. But he is the lapdog of the owners, so it is understandable that they would be upset when someone else complains.

Fortunately, one embarrassment will come to an end soon. The final bids for the Mets, and the financing plans, are due on Monday. The Wilpon’s reign will be at end soon enough.

And maybe then, the New York Mets circus will come to an end. One has to expect three rings if ownership is a group of clowns.
